Profit & Loss report

How to read income, expenses, profit, report periods, expandable rows, drill-ins, and downloads.

The short version

The Profit & Loss report shows revenue, expenses, and profit or loss over the report period you select. Check the period first, then expand rows or drill into numbers when you need detail.

What the Profit & Loss is for

The Profit & Loss report, often called the P&L, helps you understand business performance over time.

Use it to review:

  • revenue;
  • cost of goods sold or direct costs when they apply;
  • operating expenses;
  • non-operating income or expenses when they apply;
  • net income, profit, or loss for the selected period.

The exact rows you see depend on your chart of accounts, business activity, and how Uplinq has reviewed the books.

Before you read it

Confirm three things:

  1. Company or entity: Make sure you are in the right company.
  2. Report Period: Confirm the start and end dates.
  3. Frequency: Choose whether to group the report by weeks, months, quarters, or years.

If you choose Weeks, the report may also show a Week Start control.

How to investigate a line

  1. Open Profit & Loss.
  2. Set the report period.
  3. Use the frequency control if you want to compare weeks, months, quarters, or years.
  4. Expand account sections to see more detail.
  5. Click a number when it is clickable to review supporting transactions.
  6. Use the download icon if you need a copy of the report outside the app.

Some totals or calculated rows may not open transaction detail. If a row does not drill in, open the related account section or send Uplinq the report, period, and line name.

If the P&L looks empty

The most common cause is the report period. A current-year view can look empty or partial if Uplinq is catching up prior years.

It can also look empty if Uplinq is waiting on data or there is no activity in the selected range.

Try:

  • switching to a longer date range;
  • checking whether Home or My Projects shows open tasks;
  • checking Data Hub for missing statements or files;
  • answering open transaction questions.

How to ask Uplinq about a P&L number

Include:

  • the company or entity;
  • Profit & Loss as the report name;
  • the period and frequency;
  • the account or line name;
  • the amount that looks wrong;
  • what you expected to see instead.

That context lets Uplinq review the underlying transactions faster.
